The Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers or IEEE  (Eye-triple-E) is an international professional organization dedicated to the fostering of technological innovation and excellence for the benefit of humanity. Also, IEEE is a non-profit, technical professional association of more than 365,000 individual members in 175 countries. The full name is the Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers, Inc., although the organization is most popularly known and referred to by the letters I-E-E-E. Currently, IEEE is the world's largest Technical/Professional Organization.

Although the Student Branch of IEEE has been around for many years at the University of Michigan-Dearborn, the chapter was brought back to life by several dedicated engineering students in school year 2003-04. Currently the UMD IEEE is a very active student organization and is striving to achieve the reputation of the largest Technical/Professional student organization at UMD.
